The entrance to the large 100 hectare National Botanical Garden, founded in 1845, is only a few steps away from the King’s Garden development. This famed horticultural collection of more than 4,500 species of trees and other plants from around the world is also characterized by its abundance of walking trails, a wide variety of special garden arrangements, cascading waterfalls, flowing brooks and beautiful vistas over the traditional architecture of Old Tbilisi and the modern city beyond.
Originally designated as a ‘royal garden’ by visiting French botanist Jean Chardin in 1625, the gardens provide a verdant backdrop for Georgia’s iconic 11th century Narikala Fortress. Even further back in history, this area became the site of King Vakhtang’s hunting forest when Georgia’s capital was moved from Mtskheta to Tbilisi in 455 A.D.
